Decayed, ashen, dirty hands
climbs their way up the scraggly hillside.
Broken branches tears and slices
at its decrepit skin.
But it does not care,
for it does not feel.
For it is the wraith,
undead.
Above it towers a wrathful sky,
about to release its vitriol.
And below it lies a beach,
with dirt tan sand
and dark, hard stones.
And the sand is trailing its way
into an ocean,
which is still and dark.
And it was in this ocean,
in its quiet and murk,
that the wraith
had become another undead.
And it is from this ocean,
hushed and black,
that it had crawled from,
faded and cold.
The wraith continues
its desperate ascent
up the ragged hill.
It steadily approaches silvered roads,
which leads to where
civilization begins.
I was browsing on Pinterest not that long ago for horror poetry prompts. I didn’t find exactly what I was looking for; most of the lists were either geared towards prose writers or weren’t horror-focused. Not even Pinterest is perfect, though it’s almost there. 😉
I decided to just adapt one of the story prompt lists I found into a inspiration well for horror and Halloween themed poetry. It is October, after all. 😉 The source I used is here, a prompt list created in 2016 by pageflutter.com. The one word prompts are very good as a starting point for endless imagination. They’re very open-ended but still provide a sense of guidance.
After I found the prompts, I looked online for images that I felt were very in tuned to the word of each day’s prompt. I will write a descriptive poem based on the imagery primarily from these photos.
This will be the first poem published in a series that will last through the whole of Halloween month. Each day, I’m challenging myself to publish 1 poem a day to this blog. Each poem will be horror or Halloween themed, sometimes a bit of both.
I really hope that you enjoy this series! Please remember to comment and like, and follow me on social media. Thank you for looking!
